About the bean

We have been asked repeatedly over the years: "Where's your Geisha?" "When will you carry Geisha?" "Why don't you carry Geisha?"

The simple answer: our suppliers didn't have it.

But, finally, the time has come and we couldn't be more elated to say: Folks; we have stepped our coffee up. We got Geisha!

Geisha, Geisha, Geisha. Just what is so special about this type of coffee?

Originating from the Gesha region (note the spelling) of southwestern Ethiopia, a British Consul (Richard Whalley) is reported to have included the beans that would become (forever incorrectly) known as Geisha in a 1936 colonial expedition to suss out the profit potential of coffee growing wild in the area. From here, Gesha/Geisha seeds travelled over time to research stations in Kenya and Tanzania, eventually making their way to Costa Rica, and then, in the 1960s, to Panama - which is the country that has become synonymous with the variety's legendary status.

Growing here with little fanfare for nearly 50 years, one farm in particular began cultivating Geisha in earnest and entering the variety in competition, garnering the attention of international buyers thanks to repeated wins. As only one farm produced this new "It" bean, Geisha quickly became the champagne of coffeedom, setting price records as its fame grew. Although a number of farmers in countries beyond Panama now produce Geisha, prices remain high and show no sign of decreasing.

The Geisha taste is distinctive and is often described as delicate and floral.

Geisha from Panama remains exclusively priced but the variety is more affordable sourced from Colombia, Costa Rica and Guatemala - as per the Geisha we have on offer. The best part? It tastes rich, darlings.

WHAT TO ANTICIPATE IN THE CUP

Flavour notes: Lemon and yellow fruits. An intense floral bouquet and sweet, floral aftertaste. Delicate with a REMARKABLE body.

Roast recommendation: Light to medium roast. If hesitant, go for a City roast profile. A lighter roast will accentuate tea notes; darker brings out the sweetness but the Geisha's distinctive delicacy will be sacrificed. For an explanation of our different roasts, see here: http://greenbeanery.ca/pages/roasting-chart.

MORE ABOUT MOYUTA

Moyuta is an old coffee growing region in the throes of rediscovery. The national coffee association of Guatemala (ANACAFE) has included Moyuta in the New Oriente brand. Coffee from Moyuta, but a village located in the eastern part of Guatemala, is gathered and processed at a central wet mill.
