About the coffee

The historic Blawan Estate on East Java’s volcanic Ijen Plateau, is one of Indonesia’s classic government-run PTP plantations. Handpicked by multi-generational local families who form a tight-knit community complete with schools and medical care, the estate’s careful traditional processing and dedicated stewardship ensure consistently high-quality beans that honour both flavour excellence and the people who nurture them.

We’re very excited to return the Java PTP to our beans roster—the fully washed offerings represent a distinctive middle ground in a region known for its funky wet-hulled method. Clean and refined in character, the Blawan Estate gives us a distinctive middle ground that shines as a single-origin shot and as a blending component. A full, smooth/syrupy body, mild-to-low acidity, and chocolate-nutty-spice profile hold up well under pressure extraction, produce good crema, and pair exceptionally well with milk in cappuccinos, lattes, or flat whites without turning bitter or overly bright. Medium to medium-dark (or espresso-style) roasts bring out the best of Java. Home roasters: These beans roast quite evenly, and are notably dense (adjust accordingly).
