About the bean

High on the slopes around Mount Kenya, smallholder farmers deliver cherry to the Kii Coffee Washing Station—one of three factories belonging to the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society. The cooperative took shape in 1997 and now supports more than 3,000 active members across Kii, Karimikui, and Kiangoi. The collective effort delivers quality in the cup and a stronger livelihood for the producer community. Expect a clear expression of high-elevation terroir: bright, layered and, in this case, unmistakably Kenyan.

Beans are fully washed with clean water from the Kii River, then hand-sorted and dried slowly on raised beds. Our taste test gave us a bright, aromatic, and generously flavoured V60 brew. A City roast brought a lively mix of fruit acidity and sweetness, a lighter body, and a long, clean aftertaste that softened further with a splash of milk. Taken darker, as a Full City Americano, the AB gave us a slow-sip reward, medium acidity, and fruit notes intact. These beans roast evenly and without fuss, though like many washed African lots, expect a density that benefits from consistent heat and a medium-high charge so development reaches the core. Overall, a a classic Top Lot AB.

AB grade beans are a blend of A and B grades, sorted by size. A grade beans use a 6.8 mm screen, while B grade beans use a 6.2 mm screen. These sizes correspond to screen sizes 16 and 15.
