About the bean
Sourced from the high-altitude slopes of Kenya’s Central Highlands, these premium AB-grade beans thrive in cool breezes, nutrient-rich red volcanic soils, and perfectly timed rains. Passionate smallholder farmers across a network of washing stations, blend time-honoured traditions with innovative techniques to transform their growing canvas—typically small plots under five acres—into a force for quality, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
The higher altitudes create denser, sweeter beans, while the meticulous washed processing method and mineral-dense soils unlock clean, expressive flavours. Only the finest make the cut under Kenya’s rigorous grading system—AB stands at the pinnacle of quality. Enhanced by iconic SL-28 and SL-34 varieties, this is Kenyan coffee at its absolute best: a harmonious expression of heritage, skill, and unwavering excellence.
In the cup, expect a refined, full-bodied coffee that delivers bright acidity and exceptional clarity. Notes of sweet berries complemented by distinctive wine-like undertones combine to produce a crisp, soft, and juicy profile that’s both vibrant and approachable. Our taste test relied on two contrasting approaches that highlight the Kenya AB’s versatility: as a pour-over, the cup’s lively, berry-forward acidity gave us a clean and refreshing result. Brewed as an Americano, we enjoyed an impressive density and body. Overall, the acidity sits at a pleasant medium-to-high level—bright and engaging without becoming sharp.
Home roasters: The Kenya AB features notably dense green beans, and requires careful heat management. A strong, consistent initial charge helps penetrate the dense structure to fully develop the bean’s signature fruity character. For optimal results, we recommend a slower, gentler roast profile after the early stages. This approach yields a more balanced, sweeter cup with enhanced complexity and refined acidity.
